Friday August 1 – The whole tree down
Come and worship
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17
Meditate on His Word Romans 6:1-14, Colossians 3:1-17
…seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its Creator. Colossians 3:9b-10
The Christian way is different, harder and easier. Christ says, “Give me All. I don’t want so much of your time and so much of your money and so much of your work: I want you. I have not come to torment your natural self, but to kill it. No half-measures are any good. I don’t want to cut off a branch here and a branch there, I want to have the whole tree down. Hand over the whole natural self, all the desires which you think innocent as well as the ones you think wicked- the whole outfit. I will give you a new self instead. In fact, I will give you Myself, my own will shall become yours.” C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity 6
Reflect and give thanks
As you enter into prayer today spend some time listening. In our fast paced culture, we often have a hard time listening for the Lord to speak into our lives. It takes time to wait, and resolute faith to listen. Set aside a block of time that can be uninterrupted and is not bookended with busyness, so you can prepare a patient, listening heart for His presence and His voice.
Ask the Lord to show you any places in your heart you are holding back from Him;
any fragments of your old life or nature you still cling to,
any parts of yourself you resent Him wanting access to.
Sit quietly focused on Him, and listen. Wait on Him to point out areas of your heart that have been closed to Him and as He does, surrender them to Him, giving Him full access. Think of the people in your life who are hesitant to hand over their lives to Jesus for fear of the difficulty and cost. Pray for them today.
