How to be a Discerning Christian

“Discernment is the ability to make wise decisions in our increasingly complicated world.” This week at Imprint Church in Woodinville, we continued our Fundamentals series with a look at what 1 John 4 has to say about making decisions that impact your belief system and the way you worship God. Pastor Darren Larson laid out this discernment grid to help decide what is essential to our faith as Christians. Absolutes – Cores of the Christian faith. Example: Jesus was the son of God. Convictions – Not a core belief, but these have significant influence on our life and the life of the church. Example: Women in ministry. Opinions – Less clear issues that are not worth dividing over as a church. Example: Consuming alcohol. Questions – Unsettled issues. Example: When Jesus comes back, what is it going to look like? Above all, discernment comes from spending time in God’s word and in prayer. Don’t believe everything you learn from books, movies, and influential people… spend time as a Christian to evaluate if the principle is an absolute, conviction, opinion, or question. Christians don’t have the luxury of believing in just anything, let the Holy Spirit guide you. Your belief system needs to be all about Jesus.

Many of us have probably experienced a D.T.R. You know, that moment when you “Define The Relationship” with a significant other so there is no confusion on the status of the relationship! Similarly 1st John could be described as a letter written to define the relationship… the relationship between Christ and His people, and people with one another. When a person begins a relationship with Jesus Christ, there are some things that need to be defined in how we live out our relationship with Christ and each other. These are the fundamentals of the Christian faith. This sermon series was delivered in July, August, and September of 2013.
